- Lay down plastic sheeting, or a pallet between furniture and floor.
- Cover all furniture.
- Disassemble if possible.
- Wrap table legs with packing paper for scratch protection.
- Stack chairs seat-to-seat with cloth or paper separating them.
- Keep in mind that when you're packing fragile articles, pack heaviest objects toward the bottom.
- Separately wrap articles with clean wrapping paper.
- Labeling is also very important.
- File boxes are the best idea for your important documents.
- Pack books flat and fill any empty space to prevent movement.
- Defrost and dry large appliances before storing.
- Use valuable space inside appliances for storing small items.
- Dispose of flammables such as fireworks, cleaning fluids, matches, acids, chemistry sets, aerosol cans, ammunition, etc.
- Drain fuel from mowers and other machinery, and discard partly used cans of oil, paint, thinner, or other substances that might leak.
- Have rugs and draperies cleaned. Leave both wrapped when they are returned from the cleaners.
